Simulations of High-Frequency Vocoder on Mandarin Speech Recognition for Acoustic Hearing Preserved Cochlear Implant

چکیده
Vocoder simulations are generally adopted to simulate the electrical hearing induced by the cochlear implant (CI). Our research group is developing a new four-electrode CI microsystem which induces high-frequency electrical hearing while preserving low-frequency acoustic hearing. To simulate the functionality of this CI, a previously developed hearing-impaired (HI) hearing model is combined with a 4-channel vocoder in this paper to respectively mimic the perceived acoustic hearing and electrical hearing. Psychoacoustic experiments are conducted on Mandarin speech recognition for determining parameters of electrodes for this CI. Simulation results show that initial consonants of Mandarin are more difficult to recognize than final vowels of Mandarin via acoustic hearing of HI patients. After electrical hearing being induced through logarithmicfrequency distributed electrodes, speech intelligibility of HI patients is boosted for all Mandarin phonemes, especially for initial consonants. Similar results are consistently observed in clean and noisy test conditions.

Title Effects of excitation spread on the intelligibility of mandarin speech in cochlear implant simulations
Noisy listening conditions remain challenging for most cochlear implant patients. The present study simulated the effects of decay rates of excitation spread in cochlear implants on the intelligibility of Mandarin speech in noise. Mandarin sentence and tone stimuli were processed by noise-vocoder, and presented to normal-hearing listeners for identification. The decay rates of excitation spread...
متن کاملThe relative phonetic contributions of a cochlear implant and residual acoustic hearing to bimodal speech perception.
The addition of low-passed (LP) speech or even a tone following the fundamental frequency (F0) of speech has been shown to benefit speech recognition for cochlear implant (CI) users with residual acoustic hearing. The mechanisms underlying this benefit are still unclear. In this study, eight bimodal subjects (CI users with acoustic hearing in the non-implanted ear) and eight simulated bimodal s...
متن کاملLexical tone recognition with spectrally mismatched envelopes.
It has been shown that frequency-place mismatch has detrimental effects on English speech recognition. The present study investigated the effects of mismatched spectral distribution of envelopes on Mandarin Chinese tone recognition using a noise-excited vocoder. In Experiment 1, speech samples were processed to simulate a cochlear implant with various insertion depths. The carrier bands were sh...
متن کاملSpatial Release From Masking in Simulated Cochlear Implant Users With and Without Access to Low-Frequency Acoustic Hearing
For normal-hearing listeners, speech intelligibility improves if speech and noise are spatially separated. While this spatial release from masking has already been quantified in normal-hearing listeners in many studies, it is less clear how spatial release from masking changes in cochlear implant listeners with and without access to low-frequency acoustic hearing. Spatial release from masking d...
متن کاملPreservation of hearing in cochlear implant surgery: advantages of combined electrical and acoustical speech processing.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS This study documents the importance of preserving residual low-frequency acoustic hearing as those with more residual hearing are selected for cochlear implantation. Surgical strategies used for hearing preservation with a short hybrid cochlear implant are outlined. The benefits of preserved residual low-frequency hearing, improved word understanding in noise, and music ap...
